Dummy items in BOMs

Dummy items in BOMs
I am using WebERP for a business which manufactures small electro-mechanical machines.

Some of the components of the machines are welded assemblies.
The weld assemblies are being purchased as finished welded assemblies, ready for in-house final assembly.
Each welded assembly consists of a few parts, each with a technical drawing.

Although the component parts will never be purchased (only the parent welded assembly will be purchased) and do not need to be items which carry stock, I would like to display them in the Bill of Material, so it is obvious to a Purchaser which technical drawings need to be sent to a supplier with each order placed.

I have read about dummy items in the manual, but whatever I try, I the 'dummy' component parts are not selectable when constructing a BOM for the welded assembly.

I have tried various combinations of Stock Category = Dummy and Make/Buy = Service/Labour.

Is what I am trying to do even possible, and if so, what is the required set-up?

Thanks.

RE: Dummy items in BOMs
I think what you need to do is to set Make/Buy flag to be "Phantom"

Thanks

Hi falconer,

Thanks for your input.

If I'm correct, using Phantom will display the children within a BOM, at parent level, instead of the parent.
I think Phantoms items can carry stock.

I'm trying to create dummy items, without stock postings, and display them in a BOM, beneath the parent item (welded assembly).

RE: Dummy items in BOMs
What you could do is enter a BOM for the purchased sub-assembly item - you would actually have to flag it as manufactured though. Manufactured items can be purchased and also have a BOM but purchased items cannot have a BOM.

I don't think you want a phantom as these cannot be purchased - they are just a BOM of a sub-assembly. They are only ever used as a short cut for another bill of material. e.g. an engine might have 1000s of parts and the same engine is in multiple cars. Instead of listing the 1000s of items in each car - you have a phantom item for the engine. You can't buy an engine with this code though

RE: Dummy items in BOMs
Thanks Phil,

So is it not possible to have a dummy item within a BOM?
